In the translation and reworking of traditional fabric patterns into the ceramic surface, the vases are an exploration of the relationship between folklore and contemporary.
Inspiration comes from folklore Greek and Swedish embroidery.
Through shifts in color and context, the illustrations highlight aspects of the historic source
imagery and encourage a new dialogue in painting and ceramics.
The front and back sides are different in design.
All vases are a collaboration with the architect and ceramist Maria Glassel who designed and crafted the vessels in her studio in Stockholm.
Technique
Wheel-thrown vessels with stoneware clay. The underglaze paint has been applied four times on the bisque ware.
After drying the vessels have been glazed with a transparent glaze and fired at 1260°.
After glazing and firing a final layer of over-glazed colors is applied to the surface and a last low-temperature fire occurs.
